ISPs and the Types of Connections to the Internet

The ISPs short term for Internet Service Providers is the gateway to your wonder World of Internet. They give different types of access to Internet. The types of connection are broadly defined as per the equipment and its type of connection used to connect you to the Internet.

The Analog connection called as a Dial- up access was the earliest ways by which connections were established to the Internet using the Telephone Lines. It is both economical and slow. You use a Modem connected to your PC, and dial a phone number to connect to the Network. Typical Dial-up connection speeds range from 2400 bps to 56 Kbps.

The next better option came in the way of ISDN connections or Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) for sending Voice, Video, and Data over digital Telephone lines or normal Telephone wires. Speeds range from 64 Kbps to 128 Kbps. The B-ISDN, the Broadband ISDN is similar to ISDN but it transfers data over Fiber Optic Telephone lines.

The DSL has become the standard way to connect to the Internet and it provides an always on connection because it uses existing 2-wire copper telephone line and is always on. The two main categories of DSL for home subscribers are called ADSL and SDSL.
The ADSL short for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line supports Data rates of from 1.5 to 9 Mbps when receiving data (known as the downstream rate) and from 16 to 640 Kbps when sending data (known as the upstream rate). ADSL requires a special ADSL modem.

The SDSL, short for symmetric digital subscriber line, a Technology that allows more data to be sent over existing Copper Telephone Lines and supports data rates up to 3 Mbps. SDSL works by sending digital pulses in the high-frequency area of Telephone wires and can not operate simultaneously with voice connections over the same wires.

The VDSL or Very High DSL (VDSL) is a DSL technology that offers fast data rates over relatively short distances -- the shorter the distance, the faster the connection rate.

Internet is provided in modern times through Cable TV lines by use of a Cable Modem and you get a broadband Internet and the Cable speeds range from 512 Kbps to 20 Mbps.
Wireless Internet Connection is one of the newest Internet connection types by using Radio frequency bands providing an always-on connection which can be accessed from anywhere.

In addition to these types of basic connections we have more types of leased lines like T1, T2, and T3 connections which are fully dedicated Lines giving exclusive access to Internet at much faster Data transfer speeds.

Advantages and Disadvantages of DSL Connections

If you're an Internet user, you're probably familiar with DSL or Digital Subscriber Line which is a type of high-speed Internet connection that is possible through a local telephone network. A DSL connection may be easily differentiated from the others, especially with its amazing speeds of upto 24,000 kilobits per second. Of course, this speed is not absolute as there will be other factors involved in the Internet connection between a provider and a user.

Basically, it works by halving the phone line whereby the line with high frequency is made available for your connecting to the web while the other line remains for your telephone. There are other ways to access the Internet aside from DSL and one is through a cable connection. The problem is, when something's wrong with your Internet cable , you can't use your cable TV as well. However, with DSL, your phone line will always work separately from your Internet line which means you can use either or both and damage to one won't necessarily mean damage to the other.

The main selling point of a DSL connection is its high speed. It, in fact, offers one of the fastest Internet connections these days. However, aside from that, it also promotes file security with its feature that allows it to be set up or configured without being networked with the other PC's in the office, for example.

DSL is actually one of the most favored types of connections these days. However, it doesn't come without disadvantages and one is the need for users to have a modem. This means a higher cost will have to be paid and it can get quite inconvenient when one has to switch from one Internet service provider to another. Another problem is the issue of proximity. A DSL connection becomes better and faster the closer you are to your ISP. Naturally, it works the other way around.

Yet another disadvantage of this connection is the fact that users are constantly exposed to Internet threats because a PC connected through DSL remains online even if it's not actually being used unless, of course, if it's turned off. But as long as the computer is plugged in and turned on, it will be susceptible to hacking attacks every second it's online.

This threat of hacking, however, will cease to exist when you use an IP hiding software that hides your real IP address so you can surf and stay connected without leaving a trail for anyone to follow.




Indeed, when you don't leave a trail, no one would know you're online and even hackers won't have a clue. With your fake IP, you simply have the freedom to explore the Internet without compromising your online safety.
